SALT protects 478 acres on the Alabama River
Through a conservation easement, South Alabama Land Trust protected another 478 acres to close out 2020, this time on the Alabama River in the Blacksher community. The protected property is also situated in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta.
The property is forested throughout, primarily with mixed hardwoods, including willow oaks and water oaks. The southeast portion of the property is dominated by bald cypress. The property is suitable for wild turkeys, white-tailed deer, and other mammals, and provides critically-important habitat for neotropical migratory birds, wading birds, and waterfowl. There are also numerous tributaries and sloughs that provide significant habitat for several species of reptiles and amphibians.
This property has significant conservation value in that it is mostly ecologically intact and is situated within a larger ecosystem that is undeveloped and unlikely to ever be.
